Conversational Awareness
You may be in a talkative mood when with your friends, which could make you seem effusive today. The intellectual charge you get from interacting and intellectualizing with other people might be something that, while exciting and engaging, could also make you feel mentally wound-up. Perhaps periodically checking in with yourself during your discussions and noting your body reactions to things today may be a way for you to see what topics are energizing and what parts of your discussions are draining. If you notice, for example, that you feel a shortness of breath, you can take a few deep breaths and veer away from the topic that is affecting you negatively. Instead focus your energy on something much more positive and affirming.
Our conversational interactions can influence our overall well-being. There is nothing like the energy we get from being fully involved in a conversation; it’s like an electric charge coursing through our bodies. While this type of energy can be stimulating, it is also equally important to notice if and when we are becoming agitated or bothered by a discussion. Since we are in the moment when our minds are occupied, one of the best ways to do this is to watch our physical reactions to various subjects, opinions, and ideas. By doing this, we have the power to direct our conversations rather than be directed by them. Considering your body reactions during your discussions will make your interactions truly satisfying and thought-provoking today.
