We need something in this board... I wrote this short last december, let me know what you think?
Today was ending as the most beautiful he’d ever seen.
He noticed this for perhaps the thousandth time he realized, but it was true… every time he looked, there was a new wonder to behold…
The sun in all its magnificence, which was too often taken for granted by him, was setting now just to his left, dashing brilliant orange light onto the world around.
Small picturesque white clouds dotted the sky, moving slow and lazy, also casually enjoying this gorgeous if dying day.
A soft wonderfully warm breeze wafted his face, caressing him and his senses, filling his nostrils with the wonderful salty smell he’d always loved.
It came from the sea which was lapping against the rocky cliffs just below his manse, the sound was incredibly lulling and the harmony it produced alongside the seagulls was ever a symphony to his ears.
His memories turned to the days he and his wonderful family walked down to the beach only moments away and played all day in the sun and the water. He realized now that life was something more than precious on those days; everything else meant absolutely nothing in comparison. It was love, and that was all.
But today… never had any man been able to look at something so beautiful and fully comprehend just how beautiful it was.
For the hundredth time, he noticed the wild grasses and flowers around him lilting in the wind adding a subtle new flavor to the smells in the air which should be unnoticeable to anyone. But he smelled these impossible smells and could decipher which were which too, all the colors of every bloom had their own smell and he was infused and reborn by each. All imparted their small but infinite wisdom to him in ways that he’d never experienced.
Again he was transfixed by the trees, lining the cliffs that came right up to the house, which were ordinarily not that impressive, but today they awed him with their presence; birch and palms were watchful and patient as a mother, eyeing with doting eyes the endless ramblings of their children with inspired affection.
Once more he gazed out to sea, marveling at its inestimable glory and wonder, simple shallow waves today, but they enraptured him like never before. He almost felt the warm waters lapping against his chest and face gently, like a lover at work with what came completely natural.
And nature was in full colors this day. The gulls were very active, and not in their usual mischievous way… or perhaps he was finally looking at them in the way that they meant to be seen as… He didn’t know and he didn’t much care right now as he watched them sail effortlessly trough the sky, calling… calling… Calling to him it seemed, inviting him to beat his wings in the air alongside them, and enjoy the age old dream of flight. Despite his rooted seat on mother earth, he did feel as though he was already among them, waving muscled and feathered wings through the air, enjoying the sky like no man ever truly had. He felt himself swoop down to the limitless ocean beneath, dive and catch a fish. He flew alongside his brother’s and white dolphins as they hopped in and out of the shining surface and waves…
Then he was back in his earthly body, feeling all of these things rocking him gently in his chair, his hair rustling lightly in the wind and his skin warm and familiar. Gazing at the sun which had reached the ocean and was sinking beneath, he looked impossibly straight at it, and he at last saw the sun and the infinite light it provided, above and beyond what it normally gave, its white essence was so pure and it seemed to reach for him now, as a father calls for a son…
He had never felt as alive as he did now…
A little later, his wife crossed the patio to where her husband sat in his chair; she came around slowly to face him and smiled upon seeing his own happy face. He was an old man now but she still could see his handsome features as she had seen them when they first met, especially now in the fading light, with his eyes closed and his face relaxed with sleep. She loved him deeply just then…
Sadness crept inside her though, because she didn’t need to look any closer to know that he was dead.
