Agreed. The marshal arts in an arena with a referee is all we need to keep the warrior spirit alive. Killing a man with a gun is cowardly enough. Firing a missile from a continent away or dropping a bomb and blaming the death of women and children on collateral damage defiles the very meaning of the warrior's art..

Marshal arts, fencing, even wrestling, I can admire, just not killing.
I'm sure there are ways to keep the ancient art alive and honor all the generations who practiced it before you in a nondestructive way.

Also, agreed. Not only does it defile the warrior's art but disintegrates the very essence of man.
Martial arts is, imo, a beautiful way to keep the warrior juices flowing within our culture. I personally feel every boy should be enrolled in the experience.

I think he is agreeing, the art of war is good if it is safe with no killing.
His grandmaster saying no killing is logical and true is Jesus Christ.

There was also something said about collateral damage and that struck a chord in me as well. The arena of war cannot hold the women and children hostage and claim the badge of honour as well. No, no.....

Socrates thought verbals were superior to the text, since they facilitated discussion. A text cannot answer objections & queries - hence the dialectical method.

Why was discussion so important to S? Becos he recognized that the free exchange of ideas was at the heart of democracy, which was the soul of his beloved Athens. So important, he accepted death rather than change his ideas or place of residence. He was a political dissident & martyr for democracy - which hired academic hacks have obscured for centuries.

Socrates seems to have been in conflict with the aristo-merchant class, which was to dominate Athens via paid Sophist demagogues (read, 'mass media hacks') - so little change there.

S was undoubtedly correct about the political efficacy of viva voce discussion, but only for relatively small communities like Athens. For larger cities & government of nations, the written word is obviously indispensable.

Since Gutenberg we have been a text-dominated culture, which has led philosophers into all sorts of errors. Eg., the spoken & written word have different characteristics. They 'map' but have limited inter-changeability.

No idea if S could write; he earned his living from a shoe shop. Hope these remarks provided an interesting variation on usual twittering about old cobblers.
