Self Realization is not, as many may believe, an end state of mystical Union. The Self no longer exists in that state.
Degrees of self realization are achieved at various stages in life each time the analytical mind and the intuitive mind reach an harmonic that allows for a reasonably peaceful assessment of the the self on the karmic scale.
Absolute objectivity at each stage is impossible of course, but the more one can see the self in a way that others see it - without pulling any punches as regard unattractive ego-centric peculiarities of character, the closer to a peaceful understanding one becomes.
Peace with the self is achieved when one's limitations are seen and accepted. Once denial has ended, the next stage of self realized development can begin.
In each stage, one works diligently on those parts of the psyche that clearly need to become more lovable.

Mmmmm good thought provoking.
I have observed this in my life....where there is a heavy period of self anyalysis and just when I think I am about to go insane the softer, forgiving and humbler side of me steps in to redeem me and lead me back to the center where there is a more harmonious balance.
At this stage in my life I find the harder the assesment of myself the swifter the forgivenss and the deeper the understanding.
Like to see the responses to this thread.

Yes, I've found that once I reach a sort of balance within myself I find that along the way there are little moments of revelation. When you realize something that in that moment you know to be purely truth. It's neither negative, nor positive, there is no conflict, it is simply true. And I believe that every one of these, big or small, are all equally important. If that makes any sense.

I always thought I had never come to a moment of self realization because I didn't feel spectacularly different. When people always spoke of it, it was this great blinding light of truth being revealed and they were transformed. I never got that experience and always thought I never came to understand anything about myself. But I've sort have realized that I have. I've seen flaws with myself and come to terms that they're true and tried to work on them. Its made me more peaceful now that the denials have stopped, but I didn't really get that they were moments of realization because they were something that evolved slowly, not in a bang of white light.
Its kind of funny that when you find out you can accept one flaw that doesn't mean you can accept all of them. I find myself working on that a lot, learning and finding that there are many, not just one or two.

I mean you frequently hear "I am the way I am, and I'm not changing a thing" and as you were saying, to some degree thats true, but if we aren't here to work on ourselves, than why are we here? If we're so perfect, whats the point? I've heard of people saying that the reason to life is simply to experience it, but I also think we have our fair share of work to do as well.

I think it is personal (and collective) growth that we are solely here for, to make ourselves who we want to be, to switch the paths we follow. Part of that is to stop fighting things that you cannot modify of course, to realize that some things change, and some things don’t. To accept yourself and perhaps find someone, at least one person, who can accept who you are underneath it all, and vise-versa.

agree to the above 3 people.
my journey to self realization (thus far) is small steps to where i am. my feelings after realization are that i am happy because i am at peace with myself and to some extent i know what i am suppose to do. i dont like the feeling that i am lost or dont know what to do.
and i dont think it stops here. i do think every thing changes. some things change not at a pace that we want them to change, but they change. of cource the change would always be either good or bad.
every one needs somebody who accepts you as who you are.

Well said fay It seems to be baby steps for us masses, it must be alot easier (and of course harder in other ways) for those who haven't had to believe without seeing. Realization and epiphany are enitirely faith based achievments for those who either can't interpret the subtle signs, or have simply not been given any signs...

Sure, 'Nickel'. As I was just reading your thoughts on this self-realization, I remembered the physics proposition about how every action in this world produces an effect. And the allegory about the butterfly lighting on a flower produces a measurable effect. And this made me think that sometimes I think I could choose my words a little more carefully...-each one creating an effect in the world, on a soul. Hostile words that land on someone. Or recognition of the other person as a brother. How powerful we are!
Magnets, "Self Realization is not, as many may believe, an end state of mystical Union. The Self no longer exists in that state." Makes me wonder, is the goal of self-realizing...real-izing God, or the ultmate Self.

Your post links to my thread on 'emotional baggage', atman; the mind is so interconnected; every aspect of it affects every other aspect. Like a machine it functions as good as it's weakest link, every cog dependant on every other cog. A balanced mind is the equivalent of a well oiled machine, an engine that can drive hundreds of miles without any problems... To control and utilize the brain to its full potential is something no one has done yet, however, we struggle just to balance and inch forward with the fractional amount of it that we use as it is. That is the test I guess, to fix what we have before reaching for more... That just might be the challenge regarding everything facing humanity today.

We emanate from God, spawn out into the universe, hopefully grow and blossom like a flower and then return to God with the scent of that flower on ur breath for his enjoyment......
Many occasions for flowers, weddings, funerals, love, appreciation....some the best grown in the darkest of compost....
