Please share your thoughts on giving allowances to children.
Is this an effective way to teach money (resource) management, in your opinion?
See my OP in the Ethics Thread
Can Capitalism Deal with Globalism?I would be extremely cautious about kids and money
and definitely against using it as an incentive
towards personal excellence
or any other motivation in life,
Capitalism is collapsing anyway
IMO teaching them money management is backward looking
Making profits and private ownership is immoral
The laws required to legitimize and police it
is costing us 60% of the GNP
all wasted time and effort
not to mention perpetuating inequality
and its result resentments
If you invest your parental teaching time
evoking their innate integrity during early childhood
via right brain drills and exercises
they will automatically know
by puberty
how best to manage their time and space
and the ethical application of resources
In the meantime
while money still rules
an automatic allowance
encourages automatic consumerism
Let them see all your bills
Teach them that family income
is a communal survival pool
from which they can draw freely according to their needs
but keep reminding them
that giving has more lasting returns
than taking
It is amazing when you take that route
how they end up asking for nothing
and instead of depleting the account
want to make contributions
