We are into deep metaphysical waters here. If you are truly interested this conversation will take quite a few posts. If not, it will go over your head and no harm will be done.
I am going to start right at the top and work back wards.
According to nuclear theory, mass and energy are inter-changeable. Energy is Mass.
Nothing is said about consciousness
Since consciousness is intrinsically subjective, science is excluded from factoring it into the equation via its own empirical rules of objectivity, even though common sense tells all of us that consciousness patently exists.
The meta-physician is not limited by this artificial rule. Thus for him, energy, matter and consciousness are accepted as all one and the same.
Atomic energy in any form is always conscious and assumes the consciousness of the form it is associated with. Rocks act like rocks, trees like trees and humans like humans. All are made of atoms and all are intrinsically in extra-sensory (Divine) communication. No two forms of consciousness are ever exactly alike.
So for the metaphsyician, whatever years you spend imprinting new and unique conscious experiences throughout your life, that effort flavors all the atomic energy that comprise your body. In other words you create our own unique atomic signature, or aura.
The more self aware you become in life the purer your aura is and the closer to white light it gets. That personal signature sends out vibes that extend throughout the cosmos. The energy you flavored is your consciousness and it will always be you eternally. It cannot die.
According to the Laws of Karma, its power can be added to or subtracted.

Atrophy of the spirit if a life is consumed by greed.

According to the Laws of Karma, its power can be added to or subtracted. the monotheistic religions also say something similar.

I think it has to be one of the most profound subjects we can discuss. Also the purpose of the life and death cycle in itself.

Perhaps Life and death are one? Thats what this, one of the oldest and most beautiful passages on this earth suggests to me. Kena Upanishad
What cannot be seen with the eye. but whereby the eye can see: know this alone to be Brahman the Spirit and not what people here adore.
What cannot be heard with the ear but that whereby the ear can hear: know that alone to be Brahman the Spirit and not what people here adore.
What cannot be thought with the mind, but that whereby the mind can think: know that alone to be Brahman the Spirit and not what people here adore.
"God, the scripture is saying, is formless consciousness and the essence of who you are. Everything else is form, is what people here adore." -From A New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle
And seems to be another way of saying what Magnet Man says above. ("Since consciousness is intrinsically subjective, science is excluded from factoring it into the equation via its own empirical rules of objectivity, even though common sense tells all of us that consciousness patently exists.")

Perhaps Life and death are one? Nothing dies but the phantom ego.

Nice Atman.....this topic has plotted the course of ancient truth to the New Age truth and one can take comfort that no matter how much these principles are attacked by science or anyone else they are preserved in their own truth.

Throughout my teens and early twenties I was an atheist. I thought religion was for sissies- people who were afraid of death and so invented a God and heaven and hell.
At twenty four my mother got cancer. The night before she died I went to visit her in the hospital. She had been in a coma for the past week. Her body had shrunk to less than 90 lbs. As I walked in through the door I saw that she had pulled herself half-erect in the cot they had put her in. Her eyes were wide open. Her expression was one of awed wonder. She was totally unconscious of me. She was staring at something floating near the ceiling above my head. I stood watching her for a minute or so. Then a feeling came that I was trespassing on something very private. I backed out of the room, closed the door and went home.
She died the next day. The doctors said she had never came out of the coma. Maybe her body didn't. But I know her spirit did.
I guess that is when the hard crack in my outer shell began to open up.

Since Atoms never die and life is an association of atomic energy and energy projects consciousness, it stands to reason that conscious atomic energy continues to exist after the perception of death.
The only real mystery is; what is the level of consciousness after atomic disassociation?
It would seem to me that consciousness would be meaningless if all the struggles of life were not an experiential process and death a summation
