Kochi is a town in the south west coast of Indian peninsula and was the site of the first European colonial settlement in India by the Portuguese in 1503. Both Dutch and British had occupied it. Some of its buildings still carry the colonial heritage. Recently Kochi has become a very active trading town. The joint venture of the Dubai Port International and the Cochin Port Trust is handling the Container Transshipment Terminal at Vallarpadam. The Kochi port houses an international bunkering terminal, a ship repair facility, a CNG terminal and an international cruise ship terminal. An international airport built under public-private partnership came up in Kochi first. Kochi, which is growing very fast, is now a hub of information technology activities, tourism and international trade. As a result there is a great demand for accommodation, office space, retail space and hospitality services. The prices of real estate Kochi has reached new heights.
About 50,000 apartments are in demand which will be met in the next 2-3 years. A number of residential projects are coming up among which some are under construction while others are in the planning stage. Many of the new developments in the city are a new ring road, a coastal highway and the airport- seaport road. Marine Drive is one of the poshest areas in Kochi. Some parts of M G road, Chittoor road and Shanmugham road are the retail and hospitality hub of the city. In the emerging areas of Kakkanad, Kalamassery road, the NH-47 bypass, Thripunithura and Marudu junction a lot of residential activity is happening.
