The Great Wall that the United States is now proposing to build along our borders is one of the most crass insults that our nation has ever laid on all the nations of Latin America - and we have laid plenty.
How we expect to maintain even a modicum of good relations after it is built confounds the imgaination. For just one example that under-scores our stupidity: we import more oil from Latin America than we do from the Middle East and we are busting our gut over there trying to establish goodwill - adding that no-win gambit to the way we are trashing international relations.

Not many people have a clear solution to this but I’d agree that a wall is a horrible and inhumane thing to do… It seems akin to penning animals… Shouldering our responsibilities as “leaders” might be a solution; extending our hand to Latin America to help them deal with their problems may stop the need for them to migrate in such mass to begin with. I don’t know the specifics but camaraderie never hurt foreign policy… Another point: we are a nation of immigrants, so a new immigration strategy needs to be constructed with this in mind. And also, Latin people aren’t just taking; they are a hard working and moral people who put family first. I would hazard a guess that the choices they make when coming here illegally are with there families at the forefront of their minds. This should be considered before some rash decision is made. I know I haven’t defined any kind of solution, but I’d support something agreeable to both sides…
